What is Jailbreaking all about? Let’s walk you through on how Jailbreaking works.
Jailbreaking is the process of removing restrictions in iOS, and allow root access to the iOS file system so that it can run unsigned code or software that has not been approved by Apple. It allows users to install jailbreak apps, tweaks and themes to customize the look and feel of their device, and also enhance the functionality.
Usually, during the jailbreak process, an unofficial application is installed that makes it easy to install jailbreak apps, tweaks, and themes. Cydia is one of the most popular App Store for jailbreak apps, tweaks, extensions and themes that are not available or available through Apple’s App Store.
What are the benefits of Jailbreaking iPhone?
As mentioned earlier, the main reason to jailbreak iPhone is to install jailbreak apps, tweaks and themes to customize the look and feel of their device and also enhance the functionality.
Jailbreak apps and tweaks add functionality that is not available in iOS such as the ability to lock individual apps using Touch ID or Face ID. Tweaks also bring features that are not available on older iPhones. For example, a jailbreak tweak called Aperturize brings Depth Control, which was first introduced in iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max to older iPhones such as iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone X, and iPhone 7 Plus.
Over the years, Apple is known for “Sherlocking” jailbreak tweaks and integrating them into iOS like these tweaks in iOS 13, which Apple seems to have copied.
Is Jailbreaking iPhone legal?
Jailbreaking is legal. The U.S. Library of Congress has granted Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) exemptions for jailbreaking smartphones like iPhone, tablets, smart TVs, and other all-purpose computing devices. This gives users who like to tinker the ability to modify their software without breaching copyright law.
However, it is important to note here it is illegal to use your jailbreak to illegally torrent movies, download paid apps for free, or commit other cyber and copyright crimes. You will be breaking the law, and would be against the spirit of jailbreaking.
Does Jailbreaking Void my iPhone’s warranty?
Apple’s support document about jailbreaking claims that they “may deny service for an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch that has installed any unauthorized software.” Therefore, anyone who is jailbroken, warranty or not, may or may not get support from Apple. However, restoring your iPhone to factory settings and setting it up as a “New iPhone” will remove all traces of the jailbreak and prevent Apple from detecting that the device was jailbroken so there is a easy way to avoid voiding your iPhone’s warranty.
Can Jailbreaking Brick my iPhone?
You might have heard stories that jailbreaking bricked the iPhone. However, that was in very early days. We haven’t heard of users bricking their iPhones after jailbreaking.
The most common reason for facing an issue after a jailbreak is an incompatible jailbreak tweak. So it is always recommended to jailbreak if the tweak is compatible before installing it. Most jailbreaks include a Safe Mode, which disables all your tweaks so that you can safely remove the incompatible jailbreak tweaks.
In the worse case, if you do hit a problem with your iPhone after jailbreaking, which is extremely rare these days, you can always restore your iPhone.
Is Jailbreaking iPhone the same as unlocking?
Jailbreaking and unlocking are not the same things. In case of jailbreaking iPhone, you remove restrictions in iOS, whereas you unlock an iPhone to use the SIM with any carrier.
In the early days of jailbreaking, you could software unlock your iPhone after jailbreaking it using software such as Ultrasn0w. But it is no longer possible to software unlock iPhone. In 2020, there are only two options available to unlock your iPhone i.e. either through your carrier, or an IMEI unlock. Both are permanent, don’t require a jailbreak and work with all iPhone models and OS versions.
The price to unlock iPhone varies based on your carrier. They support all iPhone models such as iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, iPhone X, iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus, iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone SE, iPhone 5s, iPhone 5C, iPhone 5, iPhone 4S and iPhone 4. Check out our post for all the details on how to unlock iPhone to use with a different carrier.
Can I Use the App Store After Jailbreaking?
Yes, you can use the App Store and download apps without any issue after jailbreaking. However, it is important to note here that there are some apps like Banking apps that actively detect if your device is jailbroken and prevent you from accessing the app for security reasons. You can, however, bypass this check for most apps using a jailbreak tweak.
Does Jailbreaking Prevent me from Updating iOS?
Some of the modern jailbreaks prevent over-the-air iOS software updates which you can install via the Settings app on your iPhone. So you may be forced to install the update manually using iTunes prior to macOS Catalina and Finder app in macOS Catalina.
It is also recommended to install the latest iOS software update via iTunes or Finder instead of installing it via OTA update.
However, if you install the update, the jailbreak will be lost, and all the jailbreak apps and tweaks that you had installed will be removed. So you want to keep the jailbreak, then it is important to check if the latest iOS software update can be jailbroken before you install the update.
What are the Different Types of Jailbreak?
There are 4 different types of Jailbreaks which are:
- Tethered: A tethered jailbreak is only able to temporarily jailbreak the iPhone during a single boot. If the user needs to restart the iPhone for whatever reason then the device then it must be “re-jailbroken” with a computer (using the “boot tethered” feature of a tool) each time it is turned on, otherwise, it would get stuck in a partially started state, such as Recovery Mode. This is probably the worst type of jailbreak, as you need a computer if you need to restart your iPhone, which is not very convenient.
- Semi-tethered Jailbreak: In case of a semi-tethered jailbreak, the iPhone will boot up, but it won’t have a patched kernel, and therefore will not be able to run modified code, which means jailbreak apps and tweaks won’t work. You will need to use a jailbreak tool to start with a patched kernel so that you can use the jailbreak tweaks again.
- Untethered Jailbreak: An untethered jailbreak is the best type of jailbreak. It allows you to restart your iPhone, and the kernel will remain patched, which means your iPhone will be jailbroken even after the reboot.
- Semi-untethered Jailbreak: It is similar to an untethered jailbreak as it gives you the ability to restart your iPhone. However, the iPhone is not jailbroken after the reboot. The difference between the semi-tethered jailbreak is that, in the case of the semi-untethered jailbreak, you can jailbreak iPhone using an app on your device itself. So you don’t need to tether your iPhone to a computer to jailbreak it.

How Can I Install Jailbreak Apps and Tweaks?
You can install jailbreak apps and tweaks using Cydia, developer by Jay Freeman aka Saurik. It is also called the unofficial App Store for jailbreak apps and tweaks. Jailbreak tools usually install Cydia during the jailbreak process.
Sileo, is another Cydia alternative that was pre-installed with the Chimera jailbreak for iOS 12, which also allows you to install jailbreak tweaks and themes.
Tools like Cydia and Sileo make it very easy to install jailbreak apps and tweak. It is as easy as installing an app from the App Store.
Does it Cost Anything to Jailbreak?
All jailbreak tools that have been released so far are free. You should not pay for a jailbreak.
You should also beware of fake jailbreaks. Fake news is not just affecting elections, the jailbreak community is also being targeted with fake jailbreaks. We have seen articles and YouTube videos that claim to jailbreak the latest iOS software update. If a jailbreak tool is released, it will be available for free, and we’ll be the first to report it and share the jailbreak link.
