We have an answer for you if you’re wondering why there are so many Blue Square profile photos and posts on Instagram today. Let’s talk about what this trend is all about, where people change their profile pictures to blue and publish tales or posts with blue squares.
It’s all about anti-Semitism, after all. It refers to hatred, prejudice, or discrimination directed toward Jews as a religion, ethnic group, or racial group.
People all throughout the world are posting Blue squares as posts or stories, or changing their profile images to blue, to show their support for anti-Semitism. The blue graphic represents Sudan’s solidarity.
When and where did the movement start?
The military council has been in control since the collapse of Omar al-Bashir, Sudan’s former president, but the people have been pushing for a civilian-led administration to take power since then.
On June 3rd, all unarmed citizen demonstrators formed a square in front of the military headquarters. However, the security personnel opened fire on them. Doctors put the death toll at 100, whereas a Sudanese official put the figure at 61. The administration shut down the internet in the country to avoid additional protests.
Mohammad Mattar, a 26-year-old who tragically died in the events of June 3rd, came up with the idea for “Paint Sudam Blue.” When he died, his Instagram profile was a “Blue Circle.”
Since the massacre, people are taking up the movement around the globe. People started to post Blue squares to support this. Many celebrities are also involved in this movement, like Gregg Sulkin, Scooter Braun, Kenny Hamilton.
What do people think about it?
The movement is getting hyped amongst the civilians and celebrities. As you would have guessed, Twitteratti has voiced their opinion, too. Here are some views by some people from both sides of things.
Clearly, some people do think adding a Blue Square doesn’t help much.
But some are happy that the voice is being heard.
People are still perplexed as to what this movement’s goal is. Some critics compare it to the Black Lives Matter movement in terms of effectiveness. Is it, however, our job to point out what is and isn’t helping?
The initiative is gaining a lot of attention, yet many people believe it is ineffective. And that may or may not be true in some areas. It is up to you to figure out how to handle things.
