YouTube has grown over the years from being an innocent video hosting site to being a mini social networking service. No, it’s not near Twitter, but in the comment section, YouTube users do appear to pour their hearts out.
If you’re an avid YouTuber, you will become acquainted with the different types of comments — and their meanings — on the website. Today we’ll tell you all about highlighted and pinned comments you need to know, tell you what you need to know about them.
Table of Contents
What is a highlighted comment?
Highlighting is an automated YouTube feature, which tries to simplify your browsing experience.
Regardless of whether you’re the video creator or regular Joe, you can highlight a comment by clicking on the time stamp next door.
In addition, if you comment on a video and someone responds, you will receive notice that someone has responded to your message, either in your Gmail inbox or via YouTube. Clicking on the notification will show the comment as a highlighted message. The logic, too, holds true for answers.
If you’re a writer, highlighting will make the response to individual comments super simple. Highlighted comments take precedence over pinned comments, which means they also appear above pinned remarks. All things considered, comments highlighted are only intended to simplify your user experience, nothing more.
You’ll see it even above the pinned comment when you highlight one comment. However, as you may already have guessed, the feature does not affect how others perceive the section on the comments. No, no, if you find out a message, it won’t show up on the machines of others. YouTube implements it, by building a special URL locally. And no-one can see your highlighted message except those who have access to the said URL.
How to undo a highlighted comment?
YouTube, as discussed in the previous section, generates a special URL for you if you point out a message. So you’ll just need to restore the URL back to its original state to erase the highlight.
To remove the comment you highlighted, simply delete the part starting with “&lc.”
The remaining bit would be the original URL of the video. Hit enter to reload the page.
If anyone clicks on and highlights the comment’s timestamp, the author of the said comment will get a message that their comment has been highlighted. So if someone finds your comment worthwhile and chooses to highlight it, you’ll get a message that says “Highlighted Reply.”
What does a top comment mean on YouTube?
If you’re a frequent visitor, you’ve been forced to see that some comments get insane amounts of likes and show up at the top. Yeah, that’s really it: YouTube’s ‘top comments’ are simply the ones that have racked up a lot of likes. If then you want to see the newest comments just hit the ‘Filter By’ button and pick ‘Newest First.’
What happens when your comment is pinned on YouTube?
If a video maker pins your comment on their video, it means they have found your feedback to be invaluable and want the audience to first see it. Likewise, if you’re a maker yourself, you might want to make a comment — you might be promoting your other videos — and pin it. When pinned the message appears in the comment section as the first comment.
