We live in a world where the two most important things that are used to reach you are your phone number and email address. We end up receiving tons of spam calls and messages because we give away our phone numbers for various services and work purposes.
Luckily for you, in the middle of the night or during your working hours, Apple helps you to ignore those calls that you might get from unknown numbers so that you don’t feel irritated. The following post will help you explain what calls are silenced on iPhones, how you can benefit from the feature, how you can use it, and if you don’t want to benefit from this feature, the alternatives you can choose to use.
What is Silenced call on iPhone?
Apple released a feature on iPhones called “Silence Unknown Callers” with the release of iOS 13 in 2019 that allows users to stop receiving phone calls from individuals they don’t know. IOS will block the phone numbers you haven’t saved as contacts as well as those numbers you’ve never been in contact with before when this function is switched ON.
You will continue to accept phone calls from phone numbers in your phonebook that are saved as contacts. IOS can also allow incoming calls to come through from phone numbers to which you have sent texts or if someone else has sent you the same number through email.
Why should you use it?
You can ignore calls from unknown callers, including those from toll-free numbers, using Apple’s ‘Silence Unknown Callers’ feature. You wouldn’t, therefore, be disturbed from time to time by calls that don’t affect you. Only if Siri is able to locate the unknown number from your mail or messages will calls from unknown numbers come through.
This way, in the middle of the night or at work, you will not be continuously interrupted by unknown people, as your iPhone will ignore them for you.
How to enable ‘Silence Unknown Callers’ on iOS
From inside its Settings app, you can activate the ‘Silence Unknown Callers’ function on your iPhone. Open the Settings app on iOS to get started and tap on the Phone option.
Inside the Phone settings, scroll down and locate the ‘Silence Unknown Callers’ option.
When the next screen loads up, switch on the feature by tapping the ‘Silence Unknown Callers’ toggle at the top.
All calls from unknown numbers and numbers with which you have not previously been in touch will be immediately silenced, but not blocked. These calls will appear in your list of recent calls, but you will not be informed of the same thing.
How else can a Silenced caller contact you?
If the ‘Silence Unknown Callers’ feature on your iPhone is activated, all calls from unknown numbers will be silenced and you will not be notified. If you open the phone app on your iPhone, however, you will be able to see these calls because they are identified as missed calls. The number should also be visible inside the Phone App in the Recents column.
The Voicemail feature on your iPhone will enable numbers that have been silenced by iOS to contact you. Callers will be able to record a message so that you can hear it later if you have this feature activated and it is available to you.
You need to have the ‘Voicemail’ feature activated on your iPhone for this to work, and to do so, go to the phone app, tap the Voicemail tab, then select the ‘Set Up Now’ button to get started. You will be asked to create a password for a voicemail and a set of greetings for your callers to listen to.
It’s important to know that the Voicemail feature will only work if your carrier supports it.
You would be able to see them from the ‘Voicemail’ tab while a caller is recording a voicemail for you. You can either play the message they sent you or look at the transcription of your voice that iOS interpreted for you.
How to make sure you don’t miss an important call
You can disable the ‘Silence Unknown Callers’ feature on your iPhone if you think you may receive an important call that could be from an unknown number. If you expect someone to make an important call, you should make sure their phone number is stored on your phone.
With the ‘Silence Unknown Callers’ feature allowed, if your carrier has that feature available on your number, you can still get voicemails from anyone who attempts to call you. If you anticipate calls from an emergency number such as a hospital or payphone, we suggest that you do not trigger Silence Unknown Callers.
What else could you use instead of a Silenced call?
You can also ignore calls from unknown numbers using any of the following options if you don’t want to use the ‘Silence Unknown Callers’ option.
Silence a call manually
To silence a phone call on iOS, you do not need to rely on Apple’s Silence Unknown Callers option. You may simply silence the call by pressing either of these buttons on your iPhone, either the Volume button or the Sleep/Wake button, when you receive a call from an unknown number.
You will also answer calls that you manually silence until you go to a voicemail. Only press the Wake button and then tap the green phone bubble on your screen to wake the screen up.
Flip the Ring/Silent switch
Both iPhones come on the left-hand side with a physical Ring/Silent switch that can be flipped between Ring mode or Silent mode depending on the location to which it is switched. Your iPhone will play all sounds, updates and you will be alerted to any call you receive while your phone is in Ring Mode.
You can allow Silent mode by using this manual trigger, after which your iPhone will no longer ring or play songs or notifications for any calls or messages.
Switch on DND mode
Apple gives you a Do Not Disturb (DND) function in addition to switching on the Ring/Silent switch that restricts phone calls to some degree. When DND is allowed, you will only receive phone calls from your favorite contacts.
The DND option also provides a feature to allow repeated calls. This way, if you have not saved an unknown number or number as Favorites calls you more than once in a time of 3 minutes, then your call will get through and not be silenced.
On your iPhone, you can turn the Do Not Disturb option on by going to Settings > Do Not Disturb and then turning the ‘Do Not Disturb’ toggle on.
You can further customize this feature with options to schedule DND, when to silence calls, choose from whom you can receive calls, activation mode, and auto-reply options.
If you do not want to manually silence calls or use your iPhone’s Silent switch, then the next best alternative to the ‘Silence Unknown Callers’ option is to use DND.
